The New Normal

Is this truly the new normal? As of March 14th I haven’t left my home other than to go grocery shopping, pick up takeout and stop at my local Walgreens. It was easy at first for me because home is where I feel safe and I actually thought this confinement might only be until the end of March. Unfortunately, that glimmer of hope was deflated when President Trump announced that April 30th is now the day to hope for freedom again.

Nevertheless, I’ve been trying to stay busy with daily projects. Home tasks as usual, a few new ambitions (cleaning closets/basement, etc.) and staying connected with friends and family. Thank goodness for technology! Video chatting has taken over my life! One friend described their home like the CIA with incoming calls, video chats and emails taking over their existence!! It is sure gratifying seeing my grandchildren through video conference and having coffee with friends through this same method. How did mankind survive the boredom during the 1917-1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic? Reading, walking, cooking, baking, household chores, playing musical instruments, relying on family, friends, neighbors?…hmmm some of our most important attributes, even 100 years into the future. Some things will be steadfast.

Could our lives change for the better because of the 2020 Pandemic? I think each individual will have different answers but I know my world has. I intend to relish the time spent with others, face to face, more delicately. For human interaction is what life is all about. We must never again take our loved ones for granted because they can be taken from us so easily. This virus is changing our country in such a drastic way, every moment is history in the making!

The corona-virus will be written about for future generations to read and hopefully learn from. We all have our individual rolls to play and how we react will enable our normal to arrive with a greater sense of self and awareness for how fragile this life truly is.

Hang on,
