Family Ties

On Sunday, September 8, 1985, I became a sibling to five new brother’s and sister’s. After joining my husband’s family on our wedding day, I finally had younger siblings. In my family I was the proclaimed “baby” but in this role I was now the older and wiser sibling….hmmmm?

This was foreign to me but I tried to embrace the wisdom, that at times, was asked of me. As the older sibling in my new family, I felt a sense of duty. Somehow I knew my husband and I should set good examples for our younger counterparts.

Since taking on this important role, I have been a confidant, a sounding board, a refuge in times of trouble and, hopefully, a complete part of their inner circle. With my five younger siblings, we have celebrated many successes together. We have had many blessing bestowed on us, as well. Although we are a pretty ordinary family, we have had our fair share of heartache.

We have gone through divorces, some horrific. We have dealt with substance abuse, incarceration, job loss, parenting issues and other life changing events. Although we have had some distress, this unit has stayed connected. I can count the times on one hand that we have had disagreements. Lucky for us, we are a diplomatic group!!!

As we have grown older, some of us have moved from our home state. This makes family gatherings quieter for those members still living close by one another; however, when we have the opportunity to once again connect it is one big celebration! Of course we keep in touch through phone, text and social media but that never takes the place of seeing one another face to face.

I feel forever grateful that my three sister-in-laws and my two brother-in laws embraced me 35 year’s ago. We are one lucky tribe and I am honored to be part of this brood. Thank you all for opening your hearts to me the day I said “I do.”

Your Older Sister,

Awww…Mamadelvec…I’m so grateful you have such an awesome connection with your hubby & family! You’re such a lovely person that makes others around you feel loved and cared for… it’s no wonder you have been so graciously accepted by them. I am pondering the importance of telling those we love and that love us how much they truly mean…I haven’t always had the closest bond with all my family members. But those that are the closest to me ( my kids, grands, ex hubby and a few others know exactly how much I cherish them…we r stuck like glue til the day I take my last breath. You are someone I cherish and although we never talk by phone or see each other face to face, you’re always in my heart and prayers. There is coming a time when I will take the 1st step in deepening
our friendship by making a call or maybe even video chat? No pressure. Lol. Love you 😘

      1. Thank you for taking on the role, Sis! I couldn’t have asked for a better role model, confidant, sounding board, friend or sister. Any one of those on its own is a tall order …but you are all of these things to all of us…and our family wouldn’t be whole without you in it.
