January 20, 2021

Inauguration day in America. What can we, the American people, expect? Will it be like any other transfer of power we have witnessed since this public display started in 1789? Forty-four presidents have taken the oath of office and on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, our forty-fifth will be sworn in. Hopeful and eager, he like many before him will place his hand on a Bible and swear his solemn vow to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States…let’s hope to God he can!

Most of the media outlets shout from morning till night that our beloved country is divided like it has never been before. Although I am not a historian, I can think of other times in history these United States and its people have been pulled apart on issues. The Vietnam War is one that lasted from 1955-1979. It was a war that was costly, long and angrily divided Americans! There were riots, protests and civil unrest during this horrific period in our country’s history. Another time United States citizens have been divided was during the civil rights movement. As a child, I can remember the protests I witnessed on the news. At the same time, there were women activists who were also contributing to the conflict inflicted on the citizens of the United States and once again causing division amongst its citizens.

My point, then, is that this country and its citizens have been through turbulence before. History has proven this more times than these above mentioned examples. As people of the most privileged nation on the planet, we have an obligation to stop our bickering, and put faith in this new President. Whether you voted for him or not, whether you believe injustice took place during the election process or not, we must try to embrace the outcome. Whether Democrat, Republican or Independent, we are all blessed to have a republic like these United States!

My ancestors, my grandfather, my father, my father-in-law, my brother-in-law, my nephew and many other heroes fought for this country during WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the Gulf War, the war in Afghanistan and all those wars that made this country and her citizens…FREE! We, as free citizens, should try to embrace this exchange of power. Give this new President a chance, perhaps one that the forty-fourth was not afforded, but should have been. Let us not repeat the sins of the past, and move forward with admiration, trust and humility for this country and ALL she stands for.

Moving forward,
