Take Action

As I’m sure you are aware, another school shooting in our nation happened this week. Six innocent souls taken, three of them-nine year old children. This is absolutely unacceptable; and as a leading developed nation, are we as citizens, not appalled?

Thus the debate begins…of course the guns must be the problem, even though a gun doesn’t just decide to go on a rampage. A gun can not shoot without a person holding it and targeting their victims. A gun, alone, can not commit an unlawful act without a deranged person aiming it and pulling the trigger! Consequently, then, how is the gun the culprit?

I know many gun owners who have plenty of firearms at their disposal. Bought legally, these owners go through vigorous background checks, as well as classes on how to safely use and keep their purchase out of the hands of others. The owners I know are not careless; moreover, they make sure their guns are safely stowed properly. These individuals are not reckless and yet gun owners are being ironically targeted.

So you may ask, how do people that have horrifying intentions purchase a weapon legally? They lie on the currently used background check form, that’s how! Let’s think about any of the perpetrators for just a minute. These individuals are all people who have mentally unstable issues. Face it, no stable person opens fire and commits mass murder…not a one!

Therefore, our legislators should be looking at laws that address the real issue, the mental health of those who might do others harm. Stop focusing on the guns, because those individuals who want to carry out evil will do it with or without guns, that is a definite. However, during a background check, if a person’s relevant mental health safety issue is identified in the system, they would be denied the gun purchase. Unfortunately, the rights of one outweighs the rights and safety of many!

Our country has an enormous mental health problem, an epidemic of magnified proportions. This is not a new issue, we’ve been dealing with mental health issues for decades; however, our nation has chosen to place a blind eye on mental health, and instead focus on guns and the second amendment. Mental illness is said to affect 1 in 5 adults. Of course, not all individuals with mental health issues are going to commit mass murder; but for those who for some reason want to harm their fellow comrades, this republic needs to take action.

Laws in this great nation need to be changed; especially laws that prohibit doctors from legally being able to alert authorities to a person they consider a threat to themselves or community. Stop protecting the rights of individuals who might engage in terrorizing society, and start protecting our most vulnerable…our nations children! How atrocious is society that we can not protect our babies from being harmed in what should be a safe haven for them…school!

Our legislators need to stop blaming guns and their owners for this very serious war we have found ourselves in. Instead, think logically and find solutions that will actually do some good. Mental illness is a serious dilemma in our homeland, and it is time we focus on how not only to help those with it; but help those being harmed by it!
