Just A Number

Age, as a noun it defines how long someone has lived or something has existed. When I was young, I could not wait to get older. At sixteen, I would get my license; eighteen, I earned the right to vote; twenty-one, I became legal age to enjoy a cocktail; and so it goes.

Age is comical. We spend the beginning of our lives striving to attain it, then our age creeps up on us, and we would like to return to our youth. Do we really know what age is best? Does age really bring wisdom?

What we should become aware of is the age we are in is actually the best age. Each age is a blessing! When I turned 60 I was a bit distressed. Sixty meant that most of my life was behind me. Seriously, how much future, in reality, did I have left? I soon realized that whatever age I was, was the best! I would never be this young again!

What I also became aware of was that actually health is what is most important. Instead of searching for the fountain of youth, I would embrace my age, and try to keep my 61 year old body…healthy!

In my youth, health or staying fit was easy. As aging continues life sometimes gets in the way, and staying healthy is not always a priority. We tend to eat more, indulge in more adult beverages, and snack on foods that don’t always flatter our waistlines. So, what are adults our age to do?

Personally, I decided to take my age and health seriously. I will not only continue to see my doctors annually, but I will really listen to my body. With immense encouragement from my son, I have decided to exercise, wholeheartedly. I have joined my local gym, and am trying to kick start my muscles. Strength at any age is important, but as we age we can’t stand by and let our muscles turn to mush. We must be vigilant and care for our bodies. Perhaps I have a bit of wisdom, after all!!

Is age just a number? I think it truly is, and with a little care and stubbornness, we 60 somethings can continue to look forward to fun, adventures, and plenty of good cheer! Let’s continue to embrace what lies ahead and feel good about all future possibilities!

After all, remember, 60s are the new 40s!!
