The Visit

On July 23, 2020 I came to Rhode Island to visit my daughter and her family. We were supposed to be attending two weddings during a two week period; however, due to COVID-19 they, unfortunately, were postponed til 2021.

Upon my arrival, things were going smoothly. Visiting with a few old friends while helping my daughter care for her young family. This exciting experience lasted one week. My daughter had been experiencing some sharp, intense pain earlier in the month and now that distressing feeling had arrived on her doorstep again. After a few tests by her general practitioner it was obvious my 29 year old daughter needed her gallbladder removed.

She had to rush herself to a well known Rhode Island hospital were the procedure would take place. Now to set the stage, as mentioned above, this is Pandemic time in these United States. My sister and brother in law graciously rushed to our aid and drove her while I stayed to care for her two children, as her husband was working. Not a soul could be with my adult daughter while in the hospital, awaiting the inevitable.

She was admitted and her gallbladder operation was done early Saturday, August 1, 2020. Thank goodness she is so young and resilient. Her surgery went perfect and soon she will be fully recovered. Her only restriction was lifting….hmmm this will be interesting since she has a newborn and a two year old! So much for our mother/daughter vacation. Our vacation turned out to be more of a recovery and caretaker summer camp. My daughter recovered, as I took care of her two children morning till night when they closed their sleepy eyes. Her husband is in the restaurant industry and summer time is his busiest. I guess I was in the right place at the right time!! Our fun summer visit turned into a work/convalesce event in a blink.

All total my two week vacation turned in to being a month long stay and me coming to the realization that I do not handle stress well. It was another lifetime ago that I raised two children. An infant and toddler are so much work!!! Raising little ones is definitely for the young!

I’m grateful that my daughter is recuperating wonderfully and as for me, I’ll be making an appointment with my doctor to discuss my mental health. Seriously, I did not handle this mini nightmare well. I want to be able to deal with obstacles and/or crises that may present in my life a hell of a lot better. This was a small hill in the mountains some people have to climb and I fell to pieces. Perhaps with some guidance I will be able to attend to other hurdles differently. Hopefully there will be none of those in my near future.

One tired grandma,

  2. Lisa, you are stronger than you think. I have seen your strength in your eyes. There are things we go through that we think we can’t handle, but with the power of faith we can do it. This is a trying time for everyone and it takes a very strong person to admit that we sometimes need help. I have had a few of these meltdowns through the years and I go by the old adage that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.remember you have friends along with family to get you through.
