When Friends Become Family

If you have been following my blog then you are aware that approximately ten years ago I took a leap of faith and moved from my birthplace. Upon arriving in our new town/home, I knew only a few acquittances that my husband had introduced me to. As we settled into our new environment it became apparent that our neighbors were unique. We all became quick friends!

Having all been “transplants” from either other counties, cities, towns, or states, we all became close comrades. There was a particular couple who became more than just neighbors or friends, but family. The very first day we all met each other it became apparent that I was going to love these two! He has a quick wit, that drew me in like a vacuum; she is sweet and exceptionally giving, a woman with much wisdom to share. We had plenty in common between our foursome; from birthplaces, to heritage, family interactions, and careers, we soon developed an unwavering bond.

As the years went by our friendship grew more and more. We were soon enjoying birthday celebrations, holidays, dinners out, and weekly coffee hours. We enjoyed many hours conversing, and laughter was always at the punch line! They became a couple we depended on. If either of us were away visiting family or on vacation, the other couple would watch their house. We would grab occasional grocery items for each other and even tend to each other if in need. This relationship was full of laughter and good times! We have confided in each other and advised one another in times of distress. These two incredible neighbors have taught me many things. With their hearts open, they seem to always have a kind word or helping hand to extend. This was a friendship like no other!

However, after Christmas, 2020, we found out that our friends would move to a warmer state, many miles away from our small, western community. We were ecstatic for them for many reasons, but obviously sad for ourselves. We would be losing our beloved friends that had become family members. It is funny how people come into our lives, some for a lifetime and others just a while. We know that we will miss our dear friends, but we will keep in touch with phone calls and all sorts of technology that we are so fortunately afforded. I remember seeing a posting recently on social media that reminds me how quickly life can change. It is about a train and how people in your life board the train at different ventures in your life. Some ride the train with you forever, others get off and perhaps you never see that person again for many reasons, but some people; however far away, will remain in your heart forever, or until your train ride is over.

Our “I”talian friends are lifetime train riders! Although we are not a walk away in distance, we will remain close in heart. We will continue to share our lives adventures and always stay connected by the memories we made together. Life will change and people will get off your train, but if you love them dearly your efforts will be met with a friendship no distance can change.

A Close Bond…

  3. Thank you Lisa, I love that word “Lifetimers”, and the train of life. I also use “ Forever Friends” and all these terms describe friendships and connections that last forever!!! Thank you Lisa for expressing your thoughts on this subject. It is a way of life for all of us and you and Dave are on our train as well as Dee and Johnny!! How blessed we all our to have these wonderful friends here in Dawson on our train, and elsewhere. Our trains are long and lasting in our hearts forever!!!
