Would you agree that most things can be solved by using common sense? If your answer is yes, then tell me why we have such discourse in our society.
Technology has changed the world and our view of it. It has opened our eyes to many interesting and diverse contents, which brings with it a double-edged sword. We have so many wonderful things at our fingertips, and I applaud technology and all its wonderful attributes. However, is it too much? People are constantly attached to their little handheld computers, checking on social media, work related emails, and anything else they are interested in. We have become so focused on posting selfies that sometimes we are not focused on life, as it is happening, in real time. We have to embrace technology, but have some common sense as to when we should be engaging with it.
For instance, should we really be operating a four to six thousand pound vehicle while texting? The obvious, common sense answer is no, however; I see people doing it every day. Should we be viewing horrific content, like people being murdered, on our little computers? Again, common sense would dictate no, nevertheless we have such access. How inappropriate is the way in which we use technology evolved? Only individuals have the power to use it correctly, while stopping the self-absorption that has become our way of life.
I also believe our society has become so politicized. So much news media, relentless 24/7, that citizens are overwhelmed with information. Constantly being bombarded with the latest updates. Sometimes I wonder if all this information is necessary. NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, FOX just to name a few, are constantly battling for our viewership. As a viewer, myself, I have to sift through the controversies and find my own truth somewhere in between. My own common sense leads me to decide what to believe. The quote from Edgar Allan Poe, “Believe nothing you hear, and only one half of what you see,” rings true even in the 21st century.
Opinions and facts are different. How do we find the truth? A bit of knowledge and common sense can help us understand things better. As I’m writing this post, our world is embarking on AI. It will surely be compelling to observe how this new technology effects our society. As our nation races to advance, becoming the leader in science and technology; we must continue to rely on our brain to decide whether something is accurate. We can not solely rely on technology to answer every question we may have. After all, technology was developed by man and even the greatest among us have limitations.
In conclusion, technology has thus far propelled the world to heights our grandparents could not have imagined! A powerful tool that can be used for both positive and negative outcomes. In my opinion we must use our innate ability to weed out the fillers, and use our God given skill, common sense to help us navigate a world that has become highly focused on information at our fingertips.
